Amazing Flower - Calendula

Updated: Oct 18, 2020

Calendula is an effective cooling, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and vulnerary herb.

Clinical trials have shown that Calendula increases cell proliferation and encourages the granulation process of wound healing. Calendula oil may be an alternative remedy to treat various skin conditions as well as improve the quality and appearance of the skin.

One study[1] found that a cream containing calendula extract may promote skin hydration and firmness.

According to Matthew Wood in his book “The Earthwise Herbal”, Calendula has some very powerful benefits for your health and beauty, some of them I will mention here:

  • It could be applied externally to wounds[2] as an antiseptic, bacteriostatic (inhibits growth or multiplication of bacteria), and hemostatic.

  • Calendula can be used to treat minor scratches and serious lacerations, it prevents the appearance of inflammation, encouraging the body to heal the tissues at its own pace. It has a specific affinity for swollen, hot, painful, pus-filled tissue.

  • Calendula has been shown to help activate the body’s own cells, at the sight of infection then help to activate other defence mechanisms.

  • It is great for treating acne condition and its wound-healing properties might make it a good choice in treating psoriasis, but there isn’t any research on this yet.

  • Calendula also considered a great herb for women's health. The herbal infused oil or Calendula cream can be applied to help soothe vaginal tissue, heal minor abrasions, and discourage infection in menopausal women.

Calendula infused oil or butter could be a perfect addition to a variety of skin care formulations, especially for dry, mature or problematic skin. It can be added to creams, oil blends and butter to make them ultra-rich and increase their ability to hydrate the skin[3].

If you’re interested in trying it out products with Calendula herb, make sure you’re buying products that contain natural ingredients only and they are free of chemicals.
